“Sounds for School” Early Literacy Skills Program
Does your child:
- Show little interest in sounds, letters or learning to read?
- Struggle to recall letters, sounds or words?
- Have trouble during or avoid literacy time?
- Seem to be behind their peers in learning to read?
Then we might be able to help!
In the January 2012 school holidays, Kids Connect Therapy are excited to offer an early literacy skills program for children going into Prep and Grade 1 in 2012 who are beginning to read. Reading is a complex act relying on abilities in language, cognition, visual and auditory processing. There are important foundation skills that if not developed properly can affect how easy it is for a child to learn to read.
The group will focus on practising and revising the foundation skills needed to be a good reader. These include:
- Early phonological awareness skills such as syllabification and rhyming
- Matching letters with sounds
- Identification of initial, middle and final sounds in words
- Auditory memory skills – remembering the sounds and words children hear
Fun activities that can be completed at home will be provided after each session and a report will be given with a summary of their performance and some strategies for school.
Sessions will run for three weeks in January (5 Sessions) beginning Tuesday the 10th of January 2012.

“Reading for Meaning” Early Reading Comprehension Skills for School Aged Children
Kids Connect Therapy is proud to offer our new Early Reading Comprehension Skills Program for Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 children who are beginning to read or have some good reading accuracy skills but have difficulties with understanding what they are reading. This program will be running in the 2012 January School Holidays.
Reading comprehension is an area of risk for all children who have a language disorder or language delay, as they move through school and begin learning literacy skills. Practicing reading for meaning and strategies around how to take meaning from text is beneficial for all these children.
Sessions will run for an hour and a half.
The “Reading for Meaning” program will run throughout January for three weeks beginning the week of Monday 9th of January.
