Better Choice Guidelines

NUTRITION POLICY

FOOD & BEVERAGE.

Kilojoules

Kids Connect set limits across various food products based on the energy (kJ) contained per serve. For example - within the Extra x 2 foods category, products must fall below levels of 600 kilojoules per serve. Kids Connect encourages no more than 2 serves of Extra x 2 foods per day.

Children who are active can eat and drink more than children who are less active

Saturated Fats

Kids Connect set limits on saturated fats in select product categories. Saturated fats can increase the risk of heart disease and so their consumption should be limited. (Dietary Guidelines For Children and Adolescents in Australia, 2003)

Sugars

Kids Connect set limits on sugar content within select product categories and supports and encourages the use of "no added sugar products".

Kids Connect encourages children to brush their teeth or rinse their mouth with water after eating, in order to reduce the risk of dental caries.

Fibre

Kids Connect encourages the use of products which are a good source of fibre, especially unprocessed foods, for example fresh fruit and vegetables. Fibre is essential for children's good intestinal health along with drinking adequate amounts of water.

Calcium

Kids Connect supports that eating 3 serves of dairy every day as part of a balanced diet will provide most people with the recommended RDI of calcium.

One serve of dairy is equal to:
- 1 glass (250 ml) Milk
- 1 tub (200 g) Yoghurt
- 2 slices (40 g) Cheese

Sodium

Kids Connect encourages the use of 'salt reduced' products and the general rule of removing the salt shaker from the table.
