So what's so good about breakfast?Breakfast is a vital meal for children before going off to school. Students require essential nutrients and energy to concentrate on and accomplish tasks. Breakfast provides these nutritional requirements and eliminates "transient hunger", also known as occasional hunger. Transient hunger symptoms include headache, fatigue, sleepiness and restlessness. Often, young children don't recognize that they're hungry and just complain of a "tummy ache". This assists children, who may have had an early breakfast or just not enough breakfast in the morning rush, to refuel and get them through to morning recess. It might be a good idea to suggest this to your school if they haven't already introduced it into the morning routine. This snack time is also another good opportunity to ensure that your child is eating their fruit, veggie or dairy snack under supervision, reassuring you that this healthy snack isn't ending up in the bin. REMEMBER: Students need to replenish those lost stores of calories and nutrients. They need to feel "energized" and ready for each new day of learning. Remember, healthy children learn better! What makes a good Breakfast?A good breakfast is one that provides the energy needed to get the body started for the day, along with a good dose of vitamins, minerals, fibre, not too much fat or salt and plenty of taste! Grain-based foods, such as cereal or bread, make a good foundation on which to build the ideal breakfast meal. Add to this some fruit, for extra vitamins, fibre and low fat milk, yoghurt or fortified soy beverage/yoghurt, for calcium and extra protein and you've got a great start to the day!
