“Sounds for School” Early Literacy Skills Program

Does your child:

  • Show little interest in sounds, letters or learning to read?
  • Struggle to recall letters, sounds or words?
  • Have trouble during or avoid literacy time?
  • Seem to be behind their peers in learning to read?

Then we might be able to help!

In the Easter 2012 school holidays, Kids Connect Therapy are excited to offer an early literacy skills program for children in Prep and Grade 1 who are beginning to read. Reading is a complex act relying on abilities in language, cognition, visual and auditory processing. There are important foundation skills that if not developed properly can affect how easy it is for a child to learn to read.

The group will focus on practising and revising the foundation skills needed to be a good reader. These include:

  • Early phonological awareness skills such as syllabification and rhyming
  • Matching letters with sounds
  • Identification of initial, middle and final sounds in words
  • Auditory memory skills – remembering the sounds and words children hear

Fun activities that can be completed at home will be provided after each session and a report will be given with a summary of their performance and some strategies for school.

Sessions will be held between 12:30pm – 2:00pm.

Week 1: 2nd, 3rd and 4th of April 2012

Week 2: 11th, 12th and 13th of April 2012

If your child is new to our clinic we will need to see them for a short 45-minute assessment so that we can ascertain their suitability and best target their areas of need in the program.

Fine Motor Intensive

This group is designed for children in pre-school who need to boost their confidence and skills in fine motor activities prior to the commencement of school. The groups will focus on making fine motor activities fun for everyone. If your child typically avoids fine motor activities, or simply has difficulty in completing these tasks this group is for you. The groups will integrate a variety of sensory motor and table top tasks which aim to enhance your child’s overall abilities in fine motor activities including, painting, drawing, cutting, in-hand manipulation and strength. We will also complete action songs and gross motor tasks to help your child be ready for fine motor tasks and to support integration of bilateral skills. This will help your child be ready to experience success in Prep.

Sessions will be held between 9:00am – 10:30am.

Week 1: 2nd and 4th of April 2012

Week 2: 11th, 12th and 13th of April 2012

This session will be run by experienced occupational therapists who will also take into account your child’s developmental and sensory needs. At the end of each group session you will receive a small piece of written feedback. At the end of the program if your child has attended more than three sessions you will you receive a summary report, ideas and strategies for home.

If your child is new to our clinic we will need to see them for a short 30 minute assessment so that we can best target their areas of need in the program.

NEW! DIR®Floortime Parent Education Session

February 9, 2012

Kids Connect Therapy will be hosting a Parent Education Session about DIR/Floortime on Wednesday 21st of March at 7pm.

What is the DIR®Floortime Model?

The Developmental, Individual Difference, Relationship-based (DIR®Floortime) Model is a framework that helps clinicians, parents and educators conduct a comprehensive assessment and develop an intervention program tailored to the unique challenges and strengths of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and other developmental challenges. The objectives of the DIR®/Floortime model are to build healthy foundations for social, emotional and intellectual capacities rather than focusing on skills isolated behaviours.

This session is open to interested parents, carers and teachers and will provide a broad outline of the DIR model and practical strategies to help you implement this at home. New families are strongly encouraged to attend.

Venue: 45 Vannan Drive, ASHWOOD.

Cost: $60 per family (FaHCSIA Funding can be used).

Please register your interest with our reception staff.
